Alta Witte

December 13, 1916 — October 30, 2010

Alta M. Witte, 93, passed away on Oct. 30, 2010 at the Groves in Independence. Services will be at 1 pm, Sat., Nov. 6 in The Groves Community Room; interment at Mound Grove Cemetery. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Outreach International or Habitat for Humanity.
Alta was born Dec. 13, 1916 in Deer Lodge, MT to George and Victoria Thorburn. She graduated from Graceland College in 1936 and taught country school in Montana for two years. She graduated from Butte Business School in 1940 and moved to Independence in 1941 where she worked as a secretary for the Community of Christ Church (formerly the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints). She retired in 1982.
Alta was a charter member of the College Park Community of Christ Congregation, which she attended for over fifty years. She was ordained to the office of Teacher in 1993.
Alta spent her life sharing her time, her talents, her resources and her love, not only with those she knew, but also with some she would never meet. Some of her volunteer activities included twenty-two years at the Independence Regional Health Center, Meals on Wheels, Community of Christ Temple Museum, church school teacher, neighborhood councils, storyteller and counselor at countless church camps, Cub Scout Den Mother and adult literacy tutor. She was an avid reader and a prolific writer for church publications. She loved her family dearly and the ripple effect of her life will be felt for generations to come. Mom, you were the best.
Alta was preceded in death by her husband of sixty-three years, August H. Witte and sisters Jessie Fleming and Helen Bricker. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law Richard A. and Jeannie Witte, Raymore, MO; daughter and son-in-law Marilyn M. and LD Harsin, Independence, MO; granddaughter Natalie Holick and husband Bill, Shawnee, KS; grandson Kevin Witte, Kansas City, MO; great-granddaughters Reagan and Audrey Holick and many extended family.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to our angels at Integrity Home Care and the Rehabilitation Center at The Groves for all their loving care. A very special thanks also to all the wonderful Groves Staff, Groves Hospice Staff and fellow residents who surrounded us with love and support.
