Larry Wyss

January 15, 1945 — December 13, 2022

Larry Ross Wyss, 77, of Lee’s Summit, Missouri passed away peacefully on December 13, 2022 in the home he built, surrounded by his wife of 54 years, Sheila, and two children, Max and Anna. He was born in Galveston, Texas on January 15, 1945 to Ross and Lorraine Wyss. He grew up in Independence, Missouri and in 1963 he graduated from Van Horn High School where he met Sheila (Beaman). Larry attended William Jewell College graduating with a Bachelor of Science in History. On September 9, 1968 he married his high school sweetheart, Sheila. A second generation home-builder, he founded L.R. Wyss Construction in 1969. He quickly gained a reputation for his integrity and strong work ethic resulting in a very long and successful career. Larry was an avid outdoorsman who loved exploring, hiking, hunting, archery, and fishing. An enthusiastic traveler, he was fortunate to see many parts of the world. One of his favorite places was Lake City, Colorado where he and his family spent many summers and a few occasional winters exploring the mountains together. To know him was an honor and privilege. His witty humor and easy-going personality made him someone everyone wanted to be around. He had endless knowledge and wisdom, often serving as the final word on all subjects large and small. A loving and devoted family man, Larry always put his wife and children first. He was known as Grandad to his grandchildren, never missing an opportunity to spend time with them. He found so much joy and happiness in teaching them his many skills, taking them on tractor rides, hunting for morel mushrooms in the woods, and fishing at his home lovingly known as Camp Wyss. In Larry’s own words, “it’s been a great life”.

Larry is survived by his loving wife, Sheila Kathleen Wyss; son, Max C. Ross Wyss and wife Christina; daughter, Anna Kathleen (Wyss) Hooper and husband Chris; sister, Kay Wyss Taylor; and grandchildren, Corbin Ross Wyss, Blake, Payton, Austin, and Lorraine Kathleen Hooper.

Larry was preceded in death by his father, Ross B. Wyss and his mother, F. Lorraine Wyss (Yoakum).

No funeral or memorial services are immediately planned. The family will notify loved ones in the future when a celebration of life is planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Larry’s name to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network or the American Heart Association.
