Harry Daniel Young, Jr. of Independence, MO passed away March 25, 2013 at the Villages of Jackson Creek with his family at his bedside. A visitation will be held Sat., March 30 from 1-2 pm at Messiah Lutheran Church, 613 S. Main St., Independence, MO 64050 with services following at 2 pm. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions to Messiah Lutheran Church, Crossroads Hospice or a charity of your choice.
Harry was born Oct. 24, 1928 in Independence, MO to Harry D. Young, Sr. and Anna “Hester” (Parrett) Young. He graduated from William Chrisman High School and attended William Jewell College. After school, Harry moved to Blue Mound, KS to help his uncle run his farm. While in Blue Mound he met and married Catherine Mary Modlin. To this union two sons were born: Scott and Mark. Harry moved his family back to Independence where he opened a Standard Oil Filling Station, which became one of the leading stations in the area. He sold the station after several years and went into the milk hauling business. He loved this job and had two trucks running seven days a week. In 1990, he sold his business and retired. In 2001, Harry married his next-door neighbor, Anna “Ann” DePoortere.
Harry was baptized in the First Presbyterian Church as a youth. He joined Messiah Lutheran Church in 1964. He worked with a group called the “Saints of All Trades”. They helped with repair and lawn care at the church. Mothers’ Refuge was also a project they helped out. He was loved by many and will be missed by all.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife. His survivors include his wife, Ann; sons Scott A. Young and wife Rhonda; Mark R. Young and wife Cindy; grandsons Christopher Young; Joseph Young, and Nicholas Finkel.
