Mary E Young, 86, died suddenly on Friday, August 3 at Research Medical Center. Mary was born on August 5, 1921 in Grandview, Missouri to Arthur and Fannie Lillard Botts.
Mary graduated from the Grandview High School and then received her degree in English and Math at William Jewell College. She worked in Sugar Creek Junior High as an English teacher for a year, before attending Mather School of Nursing in New Orleans. She received her Master's degree in Religious Education at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky in 1949. She married and accompanied her husband to the Philippines and Valdosta Georgia. Over the next 20 years, she worked in various hospitals in the Kansas City area and served as a school nurse in the Grandview School System. She later received her Bachelor's degree in Nursing and her Master of Arts degree in Medical-Surgical Nursing at the University of Iowa and worked the majority of her professional life (1966-1987) as an Assistant Professor of Nursing at Central Missouri State University (now known as the University of Central Missouri).
Mary was an active member of the Community of Christ Liberty Street Congregation. She served on the Board of Directors of the RLDS Professional Nurses' Association and held memberships in the American Nurse's Association, Sigma Theta Tau nurses' honor society, Church Women United, and the Independence Music Club.
She is survived by her son, Tip Young of Cheyenne, WY, and his children, Krista, Elise (recently married to John Hubbard), and David and her son Ted R. Young and her daughter-in-law, Jeri Beth of Blue Springs, MO, and their children, Kim, Kelley, Clinton, and Charlie. Other surviving members include her brother, Jim Botts and sister-in-law Shirley, and a number of nieces and nephews. Her deceased siblings include Fayette Botts and Margaret Heafer.
Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Aug 8th, at the Speaks Suburban Chapel, 10820 E. 39th St., Independence, MO. Visitation will be Thursday, Aug 7th, 7-9 p.m. at the chapel. Burial is at the cemetery in Belton, Missouri. The family suggests donations to the Mary E. Young Nursing Scholarship at the University of Central Missouri, Warrensburg.
