Helen F. Zelk, 86, Independence, MO, died Sunday, August 30, 2009, at her home. Vistitation will be 9:30-10:30 am on Saturday, September 5th, at the Carson-Speaks Midtown Chapel, 1501 W. Lexington, Independence, with the service following at 10:30 am. Burial will be in Mound Grove Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggest contributions to the Waldo Ave. Restoration Branch Youth Fund. Mrs. Zelk was born September 16, 1922, in Johannesburg, MI, to John and Edith (Soper) Campbell. She had lived in the Independence area since 1946. She had worked as a nurse’s aid in the 1940’s and at the IRS in the 1960s. She was always active in her church work, serving as Vacation Bible School work and director, den mother, Zioneer leader, and Zion’s League leader for her three sons. She also served in the woman’s department at the Blue Ridge, Enoch Hill, and Waldo congregations. While at Enoch Hill she worked many hours with her friends baking bread, and serving the many guests for World Conference at the Auditorium. She was active in the Laurel Club at the Auditorium for many years. She was a member of the Heritage House Restoration Branch. She was proud to be called wife, mother, grandmother, and homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Joseph Zelk; brothers Gerry, Richard and Willis Campbell; and her parents. Her survivors include three sons: J. Kenneth Zelk and wife Lucille, John E. Zelk and wife Carole, all of Independence, and Mark A. Zelk, of California; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and two brothers, Vivan Campbell, Grayling, MI, and Kenneth Campbell and wife Veda, Independence.
