Sophie Thomas Zieber, 87, Independence, MO passed away Sunday, November 22, 2009 at home, surrounded by her family.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at Speaks Suburban Chapel; 18020 E. 39th St. Independence, MO. Burial to follow at Floral Hills Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 PM Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Crossroad Hospice.

Sophie was born November 7, 1922 in Franklin, KS the daughter of Jacob and Louise (Semmerneg) Gartner. She spent her childhood in Franklin, KS and married Charles Thomas on October 12, 1941 and moved to Independence, MO in 1945 after WWII. She was remarried in 1999 to Melvin Zieber. Sophie and Charles Thomas did God’s ministry as various rest homes where Charles was pastor. Music and religion played an intricate part in Sophie’s life and she enjoyed singing in church choirs. She was a dedicated mother and was involved in the life of her children serving in many school PTA’s and ensuring that all of her children were involved in music lessons. She also had a strong belief in God and was very active in her church volunteering in many areas to help in any way she could to promote the work of her Heavenly Father.

She was preceded in death by her sisters, Mary Gartner, Grace Chaussard, and Kay Burr; brothers, Joe, Frank, Louie and Ed Gartner.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin Zieber; children, Jack Thomas and his wife Velma of Camdenton; Kay Pirch and her husband Jim of Linn Creek; and Ron Thomas of Independence; stepchildren, Allan Zieber and his wife Wendie of Independence; and Loretta Zieber Martin and her husband Ron of Rex, GA. Grandchildren, Coy and Frank Arreguin of Oak Grove; Shauna Howell of Camdenton; Travis and Deana Thomas of Camdenton, Jackie Troll of Gladstone; Jennifer and Scott Gauch of Belleville, IL; and Ashley and Arielle Thomas of Independence; eight grandchildren; step-grandchildren, Holly Martin of Rex, GA; and Andy and Amy Zieber of Independence; brother, Jack Gartner of Independence, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.
